The object of the game is to be the first to move all four marbles from the Base row clockwise around the board to safety in the Home row. Play proceeds in a clockwise direction with each player rolling the die and moving a playable marble the number of holes indicated by the roll. A one or a six must be rolled in order to move a marble into play from a Base hole to the Start hole, although the player may instead opt to move a marble already in play. Either a one or six also entitles the player to roll again, regardless of whether they were able to use the previous roll. Players may not jump over or land on their own marbles, but it is legal to jump over or land on opponents' marbles. If a marble does land on a hole occupied by an opponent's marble, the opponent's marble is sent back to its Base, and may be put back into play on a subsequent turn by rolling a one or a six, as usual. Marbles which make it into the Home row are safe, however, since an opponent may not move into another player's Home row. A marble in the Start row may optionally take a short-cut around to Home via the Center hole. This applies only to marbles in the Start row and only if the die roll is the exact number needed to land in the Center. For example, a marble at the Start hole may move to the Center if a six is rolled. A roll of one is required to move a marble from the Center, and it is moved to the Off-center hole leading to Home. A marble may only be moved into or within the Home row if the roll does not exceed the number of Home holes available.
